Searching for insight into choosing appropriate escape games for various age groups?

Then this is the blog post for you!

Allow us – Lost Reality Escape Room in Perth – to unpack what you need to know about age limits and recommendations in escape rooms.

What are escape rooms? (skip this section if you know what they are)

An escape room, also known as an escape game and sometimes even as a “mystery room,” is a live, interactive game where a group of people are “locked” in a themed room and must solve puzzles, riddles, and clues to “escape” within a set time limit

Think sneaking into a “criminal mastermind’s hideout” to stop his destructive plans for London – the storyline for our Sherlock Holmes adventure.

Sounds fun, right?

A popular idea for group outings

group-outings

Since arriving on the live entertainment scene, escape rooms have exploded in popularity, becoming a go-to activity for everyone, from families having a day out to office colleagues looking for get-together ideas.

Whether it’s a weekend outing or a family celebration like a kids’ birthday party, escape rooms have proven an enjoyable setting for various family events.

Which brings us to the topic of escape room age limits and recommendations.

Sneak-peek into the post

We’ll begin by looking at why age limits exist in the first place and how they can vary according to the game theme.

We’ll follow that up with escape game tips for different ages – kids, teens, adults, and seniors.

That done, we’ll see how physical agility and cognitive ability are related to age limits.

Let’s dig in!

Age Limits in Escape Rooms

age-limits

From safety to matching skill levels, there are reasons why some age limits do exist in escape rooms.

Usually, the adventure theme plays a big role in whether it’s appropriate for all ages or not.

Why age restrictions exist

Some escape rooms could contain props or equipment that would be risky for younger players to handle.

Certain puzzles and challenges may be too complicated for children.

And finally, some themes may simply not appeal to young adventurers or be inappropriate.

How the theme matters

Just like movies, certain escape game themes, and storylines may be appropriate for mature minds only.

One easy example is horror-themed rooms – many are unsuitable for young players.

On the other hand, our Frozen King game, with its references to an army of the undead and a warring kingdom, may have maximum appeal among fans of certain TV shows…

The minimum and maximum ages for participation

A maximum age for an escape room would be extremely rare. We don’t have any, and we haven’t heard of any escape room which does either.

As far as the minimum age is concerned, it varies from escape room to escape room. It could be as low as 8 or 9 years.

Taking a look at physical activity and cognitive ability in escape rooms

We’ve referred to “cognitive simulation” as a benefit for seniors and physical challenges inside the room.

Let’s take a brief look at these two aspects.

Physical activity

While escape rooms aren’t meant to be tests of strength or fitness, they can include one or two physically difficult challenges to enhance the experience.

Examples are moving objects and crawling through narrow spaces.

Ensure everyone in your group is comfortable with these before selecting a game.

Making the experience physically accessible

Many escape rooms do tweak their games to make them more accessible on request, such as:

  • Providing alternative puzzle-solving methods.
  • Adjusting room layouts for wheelchair access.
  • Offering hints or assistance when needed.

Cognitive ability

“Cognitive ability” sounds pretty forbidding, but it’s just your ability to think creatively and solve problems.

Which are the most important part of an escape game, making it a great activity for improving cognitive function and mental agility, particularly for seniors and young kids.

This is rarer, but some escape rooms offer to adapt their games for younger players by simplifying the puzzles or adding extra time.

Some frequently asked questions about escape rooms for various age groups

faq

From specific queries such as whether 5 to 6-year-old kids can play to which age groups enjoy escape adventures the most – you’ll find the most frequently made queries answered!

What age is appropriate for escape rooms?

Escape rooms are for people of all ages, providing an opportunity to practice teamwork and problem-solving skills.

While young kids (say of age 9 and below) may be unable to understand the game fully, they will enjoy the special effects and taking part in the challenges.

Lost Reality Adds: We recommend our games for players aged 12 and above, but we welcome players of all ages.

Can kids as young as 5 or 6 participate in escape rooms?

Generally speaking, kids as young as 5 or 6 may like certain aspects of the experience (like some special effects or taking part in some puzzles) but they may not appreciate the game fully.

Please note that almost every escape room will require at least one adult to be present inside the room with the children.

Lost Reality Adds: Our recommended age to play our rooms is 12 and above as the puzzles in our games can be quite challenging!

Are escape rooms suitable for 9 to 14-year-olds?

Absolutely! Barring some complex themes, 9 to 14-year-olds should be able to actively participate in escape rooms!

Lost Reality Adds: While we recommend players be 12 or older, as some puzzles can be quite challenging, we allow younger kids to participate. Please note that a paying adult must accompany kids under 15.

Can minors participate in escape rooms alone?

In most cases, no. While the specific age varies, most escape rooms require at least one adult to be present inside the room along with the group of kids.

Lost Reality Adds: We require that kids 15 and under have at least 1 paying adult in the room.

Can babies go to escape rooms?

It depends on the escape room in question – whether there will be space for a stroller inside, whether the baby could be frightened by the game and so on.

Lost Reality Adds: We have no problem with babies, but please remember that the rooms may not have space to put them down or for a stroller. Please contact us beforehand so we can discuss any concerns or queries.

How old must you be to do an escape room in Australia?

Age requirements may vary by location and theme, but Australia’s escape rooms are generally suitable for ages 9 and up.

Lost Reality Adds: In our Perth escape room, we recommend that players be no younger than 12; but we do allow younger kids to participate.

Are escape rooms too challenging for kids?

Escape rooms are challenging for everyone – that’s the charm!

That being said, certain challenges may be too complicated for younger minds – when in doubt, contact the room!

Lost Reality Adds: We recommend our games for ages 12 and upwards but welcome younger players to have a crack if they’re determined!

Can seniors enjoy escape rooms?

You bet! Seniors can have a blast in escape rooms, as it allows them to socialise in person and challenges their cognitive abilities!

Talk with them about their favourite themes, and check with the escape room about mobility.

Is there an age restriction on escape rooms?

There are two things you need to look for:

  • A recommended age below which players may not be able to appreciate the game fully.
  • An age limit in certain rooms, below which players cannot take part due to the nature of the experience.

Here at Lost Reality, for example, we recommend players be 12 or older; but we allow younger kids to participate.

Which age group uses escape rooms the most?

This varies from place to place. That being said, the most frequent escape room players seem to be adults aged 18 to 40.

Lost Reality Adds: Our escape games are for people of all ages, providing an opportunity to practice teamwork and problem-solving skills. Whether for a corporate/team building event, a family outing or just hanging out with your friends, you’ll have fun at Lost reality Escape Room.

What age is the target market for escape rooms?

Escape rooms generally target a broad audience, from kids as young as 9 to seniors looking for a fun and engaging activity.

However, the core target market is usually young to middle-aged adults, as they tend to be more drawn to the problem-solving and interactive aspects of the experience.

Can any age group participate in escape rooms – key points

Escape rooms are an immersive activity that offers benefits for all age groups.

Although some games may have age limits due to mature themes and difficult puzzles, most escape rooms offer at least one adventure open to players of all ages.
